Outreach and Education

Residential areas surround Woodside golf course, these are the areas that outreach and education should be focused on.  Throughout the year outreach to these communities could happen twice per season (golf season, and winter).  Some possibilities of activities for the summer is to hold members nights where they can come out and get taught how to rake a bunker, mow a fairway, or change a pin, and get a free meal out of the deal as well.  This is a benefit because most people do not understand what actually goes on in the maintenance department of a golf course, and this could help them to appreciate and understand the measures we take to be environmental stewards and still create a high quality product.
A member/staff tournament is another possible option for education. The benefit is to put a name to the face, golfers see the turf department out there everyday but rarely have time to chat. This would be a good opportunity to get to know the members and vise versa, creating a friendly environment when out working. Within the winter months flooding a small area of the driving range to make a skating rink while also having a hot chocolate station, gives people an opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy a fun day, It will also attract more business to the clubhouse that stays open year round. As spring draws near people may be curious on basic lawn management and a seminar could be held educating them on fertilizer choices, irrigation practices and mowing heights. Out reach is a great opportunity to educate the public on how a golf course operates and to develop good relationships with the potential customers for your club.
